The jiu jitsu community and prevention of loneliness
In 2018, a national survey created by Cigna showed that loneliness levels reached an all-time high. Approx. 50% of 20,000 U.S. adults reported feeling lonely most of the time.
Forty percent of survey participants also, unfortunately, described that they often feel that their relationships are not meaningful leading to isolation.
"There is robust evidence that social isolation and loneliness significantly increase the risk for premature mortality, and the magnitude of the risk exceeds that of many leading health indicators," - Holt Lunstad
These numbers are a cause for concern because of the mental wellbeing risks associated with loneliness. According to a meta-analysis co-authored by Julianne Holt-Lunstad, Ph.D., a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Brigham Young University, showed that a low level of social connection raises risks as much as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or having an alcohol addiction.
She also discovered that loneliness is twice as harmful to physical and mental wellneing as being obese (Perspectives on Psychological Science, Vol. 10, No. 2, 2015).

Group jiu jitsu classes create an enormous sense of belonging among some practitioners. As a training partner/teammate, you are a large part of another person's journey. BJJ is a social sport as you need to be able to read your opponent's body movements and react accordingly to prevent being submitted.
This art form attracts people from all aspects of life. The mats may be the best place to find people that relate to your interest outside of Jiu-Jitsu as well. If you are ever feeling lonely, remember that it may be harmful to your mentality and social abilities. Always know there will be practitioners on the mats to welcome you with open arms and friendly chokes.

After a long training session, you may find it easier to stay calm in stressful situations as you have already let go of your fighting energy.
